On a Wing
a poem

Sunanda Chatterjee is a Pathologist and Medical Director of a laboratory in a community hospital in Southern California.

"Oh look up, Sir, high up in the sky
That young bird, Sir, has learnt to fly
Oh look how elegant, how graceful, how swift
Look at her dive, Oh look at her twist!

"She says that you taught her, that you showed her how.
One day she’ll be better, than she is now.
She flies with such ease, Sir, one day you will see
She will outshine us, yes, both you and me."

The King looked up and saw the young flyer
She flew with ease, going higher and higher,
"She has the talent, she learnt on her own
She takes a path that I have not shown.

"I must be the best in each and every thing
She leaves me no choice, but to clip her wing."
Her wing is now clipped, she falls with a thud
Out from the sky, and into the mud.

"How did this happen, who did this to me?
Help me, kind Sir," she begs with a plea.
"Don’t worry, my child," says the vile King
"I will teach you to fly with only one wing

"You will not be graceful or elegant or swift
You will not dive, nor will you twist
They will call you brave and you will be heard
When you make a living, as a one-winged bird."
